1. Why become a counsellor? If not a counsellor would you have been in any other profession?
Being a counsellor gives me a chance to support and educate, and contribute to the patient’s holistic well-being, walking with them in their journey.
Music will be the area that I would venture into as music is healing.
2. What’s one goal you hope to achieve as a counsellor?
I hope to let patients and family know that this journey is like a movie, where the director and lead role is the patient and we are his supporting role. How it is scripted is not up to us to decide but we are here to complement and support whatever that is needed for we all know the ending of the story.
3. Any interesting experiences? Or unforgettable incidences?
All cancer patients react and behave differently. Being in oncology for many years does not prepare you for the emotional roller coaster ride and the physical exhaustion that I personally faced when a loved one passes on with this disease.
4. How do you cope with the patient’s emotional state? Does it affect you as well?
One cannot shy away from being emotionally engaged with the patient. Its how you disengage and knowing when to detach that will keep you from being drained.
Getting away from the environment, taking breaks, talking to fellow colleagues or having some time to oneself helps one relax and de-stress.
5. What would you say to someone who would like to volunteer or counsel with CanHOPE?
It is a journey that not everyone is able to take. But if you are strong enough with a big heart, do go ahead with full speed!
CanHOPE is a non-profit cancer counselling and support provided by Parkway Cancer Centre, Singapore.
